The Protein Level in Your Dogs Food May Be Influencing Their Aggression and Anxiety

The idea that diet influences behaviour is well established in human nutrition research — and increasingly supported in canine behavioural science. A study examining the relationship between dietary protein levels and validated behavioural outcomes in Golden Retrievers has found that both high-protein and low-protein diets are associated with specific behavioural differences compared to dogs eating medium-protein diets. The findings are not dramatic. But they are statistically significant — and they point toward diet as a variable that clinicians and owners should be routinely considering when evaluating behavioural problems. 🐾

Researchers G. Davis, Julia Labadie, Brenna Swafford, and Melissa Bain used data from Golden Retrievers participating in a prospective canine health study, collecting owner-completed health and lifestyle questionnaires alongside dietary information from dogs eating commercially available dry food as at least 80 percent of daily intake. Diets were categorised as high protein (30 percent or above), medium protein (21 to 29 percent), or low protein (20 percent or below). Ten behavioural outcomes from a validated survey were assessed, with logistic regression used to estimate associations between protein level and behaviour while controlling for sex, reproductive status, and primary lifestyle.

What the Data Found Across Protein Categories

Two significant associations emerged from the analysis. Compared to dogs fed medium-protein diets, dogs fed high-protein diets were 1.3 times more likely to show dog rivalry — inter-dog aggression or competitive behaviour toward other dogs. Dogs fed low-protein diets were 1.4 times more likely to show separation-related behaviour compared to the medium-protein group.

Neither association is large in absolute terms — a 30 to 40 percent increase in odds rather than a doubling or tripling of risk. And both findings come from an observational design in which confounders cannot be fully controlled. Dogs that end up on high-protein diets may differ from medium-protein dogs in ways beyond diet that also influence aggression — owner preferences, training approaches, activity levels, and the reasons owners selected specific foods in the first place. The associations are real and statistically significant. They are not, at this stage, proven causal relationships.

But the directional plausibility of both findings is grounded in nutritional biochemistry that makes the associations worth taking seriously rather than dismissing as coincidence. The high-protein and inter-dog aggression link fits with what is known about the relationship between dietary protein, amino acid availability, and serotonergic function — the same tryptophan-serotonin pathway covered in the earlier research in this series. High total protein intake can increase the availability of competing large neutral amino acids that compete with tryptophan for blood-brain barrier transport, potentially reducing central serotonin synthesis and lowering the neurochemical threshold for reactive and aggressive behaviour.

The low-protein and separation anxiety link is less immediately intuitive but also mechanistically plausible. Adequate protein intake supports neurotransmitter synthesis, stress hormone regulation, and the physiological resilience that allows a dog to tolerate separation without tipping into distress. A chronically protein-insufficient nervous system may be less equipped to regulate the anxiety response that separation triggers — producing the association the data documents.

What This Means for Behavioural Assessment in Practice ⚠️

The researchers are explicit in their conclusion: when assessing and treating aggression and separation-related behaviours, clinicians should evaluate and weigh the importance of diet alongside the other factors they already consider. This is a recommendation to expand the standard behavioural assessment rather than to replace its existing components — training history, socialisation, genetics, owner relationship quality, environmental stressors — with a dietary audit. Diet is one variable in a multifactorial picture. This study suggests it may be a more relevant variable than current practice typically acknowledges.

For owners managing a Golden Retriever with inter-dog aggression or separation anxiety, the dietary protein level of the food being fed is a straightforward piece of information to obtain and a relatively low-cost variable to adjust under veterinary guidance. A dog on a high-protein diet who is showing inter-dog aggression has a research-grounded reason to have that protein level reviewed as part of the behavioural management plan. A dog on a low-protein diet who is showing separation-related distress has an equally research-grounded reason to have their dietary protein adequacy assessed.

Neither finding replaces behavioural intervention. But diet modification alongside behavioural work may support outcomes that behavioural intervention alone does not fully achieve — particularly if a dietary factor is creating a neurochemical environment that makes the target behaviour more likely to occur regardless of the training being applied.

The Physical and the Behavioural Are Not Separate Systems 🐕
