What the Dog Face Can Do That a Wolf Face Cannot
One of the most striking findings in this review concerns comparative anatomy. Dogs have developed specific facial muscle configurations that their closest wild relatives — wolves — cannot produce. The levator anguli oculi medialis muscle, which controls inner brow raising, is present and active in dogs but functionally absent in wolves. This anatomical difference is not incidental. It appears to be a product of domestication — the result of thousands of years of selection pressure favouring dogs who could communicate more expressively with humans.
The practical consequence is that a dog’s eyebrow and inner eye region carries emotional and pain-related information in a way that wolflike facial anatomy simply cannot produce. Inner brow raising in dogs has been directly associated with attention-seeking social behaviour and with pain states. It is one of the most consistent signals in the canine facial action coding system — and it is a signal that evolved specifically in the context of the human-dog relationship.
Beyond the brows, the review identifies specific changes in eye aperture, lip position, ear carriage, and the tension visible in periocular musculature as clinically relevant indicators of pain or nociception. These are not vague impressions. They are measurable anatomical changes in specific facial regions that occur in response to aversive states — and they can be systematically assessed using validated pain scales developed for clinical veterinary use.
Emotional Contagion and What It Means for the Bond ⚠️

There is also ongoing scientific discussion the review addresses directly: whether dog facial expressions represent genuine emotional communication or are primarily the result of mimicry without underlying emotional correspondence. The current evidence points toward genuine emotional association rather than pure mimicry — but the researchers are careful to acknowledge that domestication complicates the picture, making it harder to cleanly separate learned communicative behaviour from spontaneous emotional expression.
