Emotions and Dog Bites: Could Predatory Attacks Be Triggered by Emotional States?

Predatory attacks by dogs are treated as a category apart in the aggression literature — behaviourally distinct, emotionally cold, driven by instinct rather than emotional state. A research paper by an Italian team is challenging that assumption directly, and the argument they make has significant implications for how bite incidents are recorded, analysed, and ultimately prevented. 🐾
Researchers Serenella d’Ingeo, F. Iarussi, V. de Monte, M. Siniscalchi, Michele Minunno, and A. Quaranta examined the role of emotional states in the triggering of predatory motor patterns in dogs, focusing particularly on breeds whose aggression produces severe consequences for human victims. Their argument is not that predatory attacks are the same as fear-based or territorial aggression. It is that emotional states may modulate when and whether predatory motor patterns are expressed — and that current bite reporting fails to capture this dimension at all.
Why Predatory Aggression Has Been Treated as Emotionless
The conventional framework in canine aggression research distinguishes predatory behaviour from affective aggression on the basis of the motivational systems involved. Affective aggression — fear-based, territorial, pain-elicited — is understood as emotionally driven, accompanied by arousal, and associated with threat perception. Predatory behaviour has historically been characterised as a separate motivational system: goal-directed, low-arousal, driven by prey stimulus features rather than emotional state.
This distinction has practical consequences. When a bite incident is classified as predatory, the emotional context tends to be set aside as irrelevant to the analysis. The focus goes to the characteristics of the victim, the breed of the dog, and the situational triggers that activated the predatory sequence. The dog’s emotional state at the time of the attack — their baseline stress load, their arousal history leading up to the incident, their internal regulatory capacity — has rarely been systematically collected or considered.
The researchers argue this represents a significant gap. Emotional states, they propose, may function as modulators of predatory expression — not replacing the prey stimulus as the trigger, but influencing the threshold at which the predatory sequence activates, the intensity with which it is expressed, and whether inhibitory mechanisms that would normally interrupt the sequence remain functional.
What This Changes About Bite Incident Analysis ⚠️
The practical implication of this argument is methodological but consequential. Epidemiological studies of dog bites have generated substantial data on victim demographics, breed involvement, and situational context. They have generated almost none on the emotional state of the biting dog. If emotional state is a meaningful variable in predatory attack expression — which this paper proposes it may be — then the existing data is systematically missing one of its most important dimensions.
A dog with chronically elevated stress, compromised stress coping physiology, or accumulated arousal from earlier events in the day may have a predatory threshold that is substantially lower than the same dog in a regulated, low-stress state. The external trigger — a running child, a small animal, a sudden movement — may appear identical across two incidents that produce very different outcomes precisely because the dog’s internal state differed between them. Without collecting emotional state data, those two incidents look the same in the records. They may not have been the same at all.
The researchers call explicitly for bite reporting systems that incorporate emotional state assessment — making the argument that reliable and realistic data about the dog bite phenomenon cannot be collected without it. This would require standardised protocols for assessing dog emotional and arousal state at the time of incidents, which presents genuine practical challenges but is not without precedent in veterinary forensic assessment.
Reading the Internal State Before the External Event 🐕
