The Most Common Health Problems Across 25 Dog Breeds Have Now Been Mapped and the Results Are Surprising

Large-scale data on which medical conditions actually affect which dog breeds across a lifetime — not clinic populations, not insurance claims, not single-disease studies, but comprehensive lifetime health across tens of thousands of owner-reported dogs — has been genuinely sparse. The Dog Aging Project has now produced the most comprehensive cross-sectional picture yet of health prevalence across the 25 most common dog breeds in the United States, and some of its findings will surprise owners who assume purebred dogs are inherently more medically fragile than mixed breeds. 🐾

Researchers Kiersten Forsyth, Brianah McCoy, Kate Creevy, and their team — more than 30 contributors from the Dog Aging Project — analysed owner-reported survey data from 27,541 companion dogs, identifying the ten most commonly reported medical conditions in each of the 25 most common breeds within the cohort and comparing lifetime prevalence between purebred and mixed-breed populations. The scale of the dataset makes this one of the most statistically robust breed health comparisons available for US dogs.

The Finding That Challenges a Common Assumption

Purebred dogs in this dataset did not show higher lifetime prevalence of medical conditions compared to mixed-breed dogs. More specifically — and counterintuitively — a significantly higher proportion of purebred dogs than mixed-breed dogs had no owner-reported medical conditions at all. The proportions were 22.3 percent of purebreds versus 20.7 percent of mixed-breed dogs with no reported conditions, a statistically significant difference.

This finding does not mean purebred dogs are healthier than mixed breeds in any absolute sense. It is an owner-reported prevalence study with a specific participant population — Dog Aging Project participants who opted into a longitudinal health research programme, likely representing more health-engaged owners than the general dog-owning population. Owner-reported data is subject to recognition and reporting biases. And the finding that no conditions were reported does not mean no conditions were present — only that owners reported none. Nevertheless, the absence of a purebred disadvantage in this large, systematic dataset is a significant finding that complicates narratives about purebred health fragility that are often presented without this kind of population-scale evidence.

The caveat the researchers are careful to preserve is equally important: individual breeds may still show higher lifetime prevalence for specific conditions. The absence of a global purebred disadvantage does not mean that Dobermans do not have elevated cardiac disease risk or that Pugs do not have elevated spinal and airway risk. It means that across the full spectrum of medical conditions and across the full range of common breeds, the simple equation of purebred with medically compromised does not hold at the population level.

What Conditions Were Most Universal Across Breeds ⚠️

Fifty-three distinct medical conditions comprised the top ten conditions across all 25 breeds — a wide range that reflects genuine cross-breed variation in health profiles. But some conditions appeared with striking universality. Dental calculus appeared in the top ten for 24 of 25 breeds — the near-universal prevalence making it arguably the most consistent health risk across the entire companion dog population regardless of breed. Dog bite appeared in the top ten for 23 of 25 breeds. Extracted teeth appeared for 21 of 25 breeds.

Osteoarthritis appeared in the top ten for 15 of 25 breeds — half the most common breeds — reflecting the musculoskeletal toll of ageing across diverse body sizes and conformations. Giardia appeared in 15 of 25 breeds, reflecting gastrointestinal infection exposure as a common lifetime experience across the companion dog population regardless of breed.

The dental findings deserve particular attention because dental disease is so consistently underrecognised and undertreated in companion dogs despite its universal prevalence. A condition that appears in the top ten medical experiences across 24 of the 25 most common breeds is not a niche health concern for specific populations — it is the most consistent health issue across the companion dog population. The connection between periodontal disease and systemic health, covered in other veterinary research, makes this finding more than cosmetically significant.

What This Means for How Owners Think About Their Dog’s Health 🐕

The practical implication of a 53-condition landscape across 25 breeds is that breed-specific health planning should be based on the actual conditions that appear in the top ten for that specific breed rather than on generalised assumptions about breed health fragility or robustness. A Golden Retriever owner whose planning focuses on cancer surveillance is acting on breed-specific evidence. A Labrador owner whose planning focuses on joint health is acting on breed-specific evidence. These are different plans for different risk profiles — and the Dog Aging Project data provides the population-scale foundation for making those plans more precisely than was previously possible.

The near-universal dental calculus finding is an immediate and actionable takeaway for every dog owner regardless of breed: dental health is not a breed-specific concern. It is a universal companion dog health issue that warrants the same regular attention as vaccination and parasite management — not occasional emergency extractions when disease becomes severe, but ongoing preventive care that the prevalence data suggests most owners are not currently providing at adequate frequency.
