Personality Traits Define Success in Philippine K9 Handlers

Research Study Chiang Mai, Thailand, November 17, 2025Gemino (2025) explored the skills and personality traits that predict success among Philippine Coast Guard K9 handlers, creating a foundation for improved recruitment and training frameworks.

Published in the International Journal of Multidisciplinary: Applied Business and Education Research, Diomedes S. Gemino conducted a mixed-method study to identify the essential skills, traits, and motivational factors that contribute to success in professional K9 dog handling. The research involved 33 purposively selected Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) K9 handlers, offering both quantitative and qualitative insights into what makes an effective human–dog operational partnership.

Findings revealed the top ten competencies consistently demonstrated by high-performing handlers. These included understanding canine behavior, conditioning dogs for basic obedience, emotional and psychological preparedness, nonverbal communication (gestures, expressions, body language), responsible canine handling, physical stamina, and situational awareness during operations. These abilities, along with trust in the dog’s natural detection skills and a teamwork-oriented attitude, define the professional profile of the most effective K9 personnel.

From a psychological perspective, results based on the O.C.E.A.N. model showed a high manifestation of conscientiousness, moderate levels of openness, extraversion, and agreeableness, and a low manifestation of neuroticism. This indicates that emotional stability, reliability, and self-discipline are key attributes for handlers managing demanding operational and emotional environments.

Motivationally, handlers were primarily driven by intrinsic factors: emotional attachment to their dogs, the challenge of managing difficult canines, and a sense of duty to protect public safety. Many also highlighted a deep sense of purpose in contributing to community welfare, demonstrating that K9 service represents both a technical and moral vocation.

Gemino recommended integrating personality development and emotional resilience training into K9 education programs. He also proposed the creation of a K9 Reserve Unit to support long-term operational readiness and advocated for expanded longitudinal studies to refine the recruitment process. Together, these recommendations lay the groundwork for a structured recruitment and training framework that balances technical skill, temperament, and ethical motivation in K9 handler development.
