Pandemic Puppies Missed Key Socialisation Opportunities

Study Chiang Mai, Thailand, October 5, 2025 – A 2022 Animals journal study compared puppies acquired during the COVID-19 pandemic in the UK with pre-pandemic puppies, revealing reduced early socialisation and health checks.

During the early phase of the COVID-19 pandemic, the UK saw an unprecedented surge in puppy acquisitions. Many families and individuals, seeking companionship and emotional support, brought home puppies during lockdowns. However, restrictions on movement and social interaction raised concerns about whether these so-called “Pandemic Puppies” received adequate early-life socialisation and health care.

Brand et al. (2022) surveyed over 5,500 puppy owners, comparing 4,369 Pandemic Puppies acquired between March–December 2020 with 1,148 puppies from the same period in 2019. Results showed that Pandemic Puppies were significantly less likely to attend training classes (28.9% vs. 67.9%) or to be exposed to visitors in the home before 16 weeks of age (81.8% vs. 94.5%). Such reduced exposure during the critical socialisation window could have long-term effects on behavior and welfare.

The study also identified demographic differences. Pandemic Puppies were more likely to be designer crossbreeds (26.1% vs. 18.8%) and less likely to be Kennel Club registered. Fewer had veterinary checks prior to purchase, yet more were sold with passports, pointing to shifts in sourcing practices during the pandemic.

The authors warn that these factors may create a vulnerable population of dogs with higher risks of behavioral and health issues. They emphasize the need for veterinary and behavioral support to mitigate potential welfare challenges and help Pandemic Puppies adapt successfully to post-pandemic life.
