Irish Setter History

Originating in Ireland in the 18th century, the Irish Setter was developed as a bird dog for locating and “setting” gamebirds, particularly in open fields. Early versions were red-and-white, but by the 19th century, breeders favoured the solid mahogany-red coat seen today.

The breed became popular for both its beauty and field ability, earning AKC recognition in 1878. Though often seen as a show dog, the Irish Setter remains a talented working dog with energy to spare.

Irish Setter Temperament

Joyful, friendly, and affectionate, the Irish Setter is famously good-natured. It thrives on human connection, gets along well with children and other dogs, and brings exuberance to any home.

This breed is intelligent but can be distractible and slow to mature. Consistent, positive training with a sense of humour is ideal. Irish Setters love to move—and without daily activity, they may become mischievous or hyperactive.

Note: This is a sensitive breed. Harsh methods will erode trust and motivation.

Health and wellness

Irish Setters need vigorous daily exercise—running, fetch, scent work, and long walks are excellent. They are best suited to homes with space to roam or access to open, secure areas.

Their long, silky coat requires regular brushing to prevent mats and tangles, especially around the ears, chest, and tail. Ear care is essential due to their floppy ears.

Significant problems:

Hip dysplasia

Bloat (gastric torsion)

Progressive retinal atrophy (PRA)

Hypothyroidism

Epilepsy

Life expectancy: 12–15 years
