Celiac disease, also called gluten enteropathy, is a genetically determined immune condition in dogs that results from intolerance to gluten—the protein component of wheat, barley, and rye. This protein mixture, remaining in flour after starch is removed, is often digestible but nutritionally poor due to low lysine content.
The 2024 study by O. S. Khilobok highlights that while wheat gluten is commonly used in dog foods, it is not essential and may be harmful to susceptible breeds. Diagnosis requires comprehensive procedures including blood tests, intestinal biopsies, and other specialized evaluations. Once diagnosed, treatment involves long-term use of a gluten-free (aglutenic) diet along with enzymes, probiotics, antimicrobials, and if needed, glucocorticosteroids.
One key preventive measure is early detection combined with lifelong dietary management. This approach can stop the progression toward irreversible complications such as T-cell lymphoma and other malignant neoplasms.
