New evidence shows how different types of enrichment impact dog behaviour — and why variety matters more than repetition.
What if your dog’s boredom was visible — and reversible? A 2022 pilot study by Hunt et al. explored exactly that by testing seven forms of environmental enrichment (EE) on training dogs in an office-based assistance dog program.
From bonding time to playhouses, toys and bubble machines, each activity was assessed for its effect on relaxation, alertness, and stress. The results? Dogs showed significantly more relaxation behaviours and reduced stress after enrichment sessions — with Conspecific Play and Playhouse activities leading the pack.
Interestingly, the least impactful activities were food-based (interactive toys and stuffed toys), suggesting that not all enrichment is equal. The study highlights the importance of offering diverse enrichment categories to improve behavioural outcomes and well-being in training environments.
For trainers, shelters and dog owners alike, this research shifts the enrichment conversation from “more stuff” to “the right mix” — and provides a replicable framework to evaluate what truly benefits the dogs in your care.
