Understanding Dog Language Deepens the Human–Dog Bond

Research Study Chiang Mai, Thailand, November 11, 2025Miatkowska et al. (2025) explored how mutual understanding and communication shape the human–dog relationship, concluding that continued learning about dog body language is essential for improving welfare and emotional connection.

Published in Folia Pomeranae Universitatis Technologiae Stetinensis Agricultura, Alimentaria, Piscaria et Zootechnica, this recent study by Martyna Miatkowska and colleagues investigates how behavioral awareness and human attitudes influence the quality of the human–dog bond. The authors note that today, the relationship between humans and dogs extends beyond companionship—it fulfills emotional, psychological, and even physiological roles for both species.

The research highlights how cohabitation with dogs has refined our ability to perceive and interpret their communicative signals. Dogs use visual cues such as facial expressions, posture, and tail movement; tactile communication through touch and proximity; and auditory and olfactory cues like vocalizations and scent exchange to convey information. Despite this close coexistence, the authors identify persistent communication barriers that often lead to misunderstandings or behavioral problems.

To bridge these gaps, Miatkowska et al. stress the need for greater education about canine communication. Understanding subtle body language—like ear orientation, gaze direction, or tension in movement—can help owners interpret their dogs’ emotional states more accurately. This awareness enhances empathy and helps prevent stress, fear, or conflict in daily interactions.

Ultimately, the study concludes that ongoing learning about dog language and welfare leads to deeper trust, better cooperation, and a more satisfying interspecies bond. As the authors emphasize, caring for dogs involves more than meeting their physical needs—it requires emotional literacy and a commitment to listening to what our companions are truly expressing.
