Protein- and Fiber-Rich Diets Help Obese Dogs Lose Fat While Preserving Muscle

Study Chiang Mai, Thailand, August 10, 2025 – A new meta-analysis reveals that hypocaloric diets high in protein and fiber help obese dogs lose fat while preserving muscle, offering guidance for effective nutritional strategies in canine weight management.

Obesity is one of the most common nutritional disorders affecting dogs, posing serious health risks if left unmanaged. A recent meta-analysis by Karoline Vanelli and colleagues provides critical insights into how different dietary components influence weight loss and body composition in obese dogs. By analyzing 20 existing studies, the researchers aimed to identify optimal nutritional profiles for promoting healthy canine weight loss.

The findings underscore the importance of high-protein and high-fiber diets. Specifically, diets with more than 25% protein and over 12% fiber were most effective in reducing body weight while preserving lean muscle mass. In contrast, lowering fat (under 10%) and carbohydrate (under 40%) levels was linked to reductions in body fat, making them suitable strategies for targeting adiposity.

Interestingly, the study also revealed that diets high in carbohydrates were associated with weight gain, reinforcing the importance of nutrient composition—not just calorie count—in designing effective hypocaloric plans. These results offer strong support for customizing diets based not only on energy reduction but also on the specific balance of macronutrients.

The researchers emphasized that individual dog characteristics—including breed, age, activity level, and metabolic differences—significantly influence weight loss outcomes. Therefore, weight management plans should be tailored accordingly, ideally under the supervision of a veterinarian or canine nutrition specialist.

This study provides valuable guidance for veterinarians, pet owners, and pet food formulators aiming to combat canine obesity with targeted, evidence-based nutrition.
