Supplements Popular Among Dog Owners Managing Canine Dementia

Study Chiang Mai, Thailand, August 11, 2025 – A recent study has found that while few dog owners change their pet’s main diet, many rely on dietary supplements to manage the symptoms of canine cognitive dysfunction.

Canine cognitive dysfunction (CCD), a condition likened to Alzheimer’s disease in humans, is increasingly common among senior dogs. As lifespans increase, so does the prevalence of CCD—and with it, the demand for supportive interventions. A study led by Julia Haake and colleagues, published in the journal Animals, surveyed 394 dog owners to explore their use of dietary strategies to help their pets cope with age-related behavioral changes.

The findings show that while only 8% of owners opted to change their dog’s main diet, more than half—54%—reported adding dietary supplements (DSs) such as fish oil, vitamin blends, or antioxidant products. Fish oil, in particular, was the most frequently used supplement, with 48% of supplement-using owners reporting its use.

Dietary supplements are often believed to help reduce oxidative stress, support brain metabolism, and delay cognitive decline. However, the study emphasized the importance of veterinary oversight, especially since many aging dogs suffer from multi-morbidities and may already be taking medications that interact with supplements.

Overall, the research suggests that while major dietary shifts are rare, owners are eager to take proactive steps in supporting their dogs’ brain health through supplementation. The authors advocate for evidence-based guidance from veterinary professionals to ensure safe and effective use of these interventions in aging pets.
