Pain-Linked Aggression Resolved with Analgesia in Golden Retriever

Research Study Chiang Mai, Thailand, November 6, 2025Pooley (2024) presented a detailed case study of owner-directed aggression in a Golden Retriever, revealing the pivotal role of undiagnosed pain in behavioral changes and the success of a multi-modal treatment plan.

Aggression toward owners is one of the most complex and distressing behavioral issues in companion dogs. In this case study published in Animal Behaviour and Welfare Cases, Roz Pooley examined a male Golden Retriever displaying growling, snarling, and avoidance behaviors toward his male owner within the home environment. Initial diagnostic work—including blood tests, X-rays, and an analgesic trial—failed to reveal a clear medical cause.

Through extensive follow-up and a multi-modal assessment, Pooley identified several potential contributing factors: gastrointestinal discomfort, frustration, and defensive responses linked to possible pain. When a faecal screen revealed giardiasis antigen, treatment improved the dog’s appetite, but aggression persisted until a second trial using a different analgesic was prescribed.

Remarkably, aggressive incidents ceased completely while the dog was on pain relief and reappeared once the medication was stopped—strongly implicating an underlying pain component despite the absence of a definitive medical diagnosis. The behavior remained stable and non-aggressive upon resuming analgesia, reinforcing the connection between physical discomfort and aggression.

This case underscores the importance of considering undiagnosed pain as a primary factor in behavioral presentations, particularly in dogs exhibiting sudden aggression without prior history. The findings advocate for an integrated approach combining medical investigation, behavior modification, and welfare-focused care to ensure both behavioral and physical health are addressed holistically.
