Educating Future Dog Owners Prevents Behavior Problems

Research Study Chiang Mai, Thailand, November 7, 2025Pirrone (2020) emphasized that educating prospective dog owners about early socialization and responsible puppy acquisition is vital to preventing future behavioral problems and reducing abandonment.

In an article published in The Veterinary Record, Francesca Pirrone underscores the critical importance of educating potential dog owners about the effects of early socialization and appropriate puppy sourcing. Behavioral problems remain one of the leading causes of dog relinquishment and abandonment, and poor early experiences are often to blame.

Pirrone explains that the socialisation period—typically between three and twelve weeks of age—is a sensitive developmental window when a puppy’s interactions with people, other animals, and environments have a profound and lasting impact on future temperament. Puppies deprived of positive, structured experiences during this stage, or separated too early from their mothers and littermates, face a higher risk of developing fear, aggression, or anxiety-related behaviors later in life.

The article also references recent research linking puppy sourcing—for instance, from pet shops versus reputable breeders—to the emergence of behavioral issues in adulthood. Puppies from less controlled or stressful early environments were more likely to show maladaptive behaviors, while those raised under stable, enriching conditions developed better emotional resilience and adaptability.

Pirrone calls for greater collaboration between veterinarians, breeders, trainers, and behaviorists to guide prospective owners in selecting healthy, well-socialized puppies and understanding their developmental needs. This education not only supports individual welfare but also contributes to reducing shelter intakes and improving the overall dog–human relationship.
