Permissive Dog Parenting Linked to Canine Obesity

Study – Chiang Mai, Thailand, 2025-07-21 – A nationwide Dutch survey of 2,303 dog owners has found that owners who demonstrate a permissive parenting style are more likely to have overweight or obese dogs, echoing patterns observed in childhood obesity research.

Research published in PLoS ONE by I. V. Herwijnen and colleagues investigates the relationship between dog parenting styles and the likelihood of canine obesity. Drawing on parallels from human parenting and childhood obesity, the researchers hypothesized that permissiveness in dog-parenting may contribute to dogs becoming overweight.

The study assessed responses from 2,303 Dutch dog owners, who provided their dogs’ Body Condition Scores (BCS) using a standardized nine-point scale, and completed an adapted version of the Parenting Styles and Dimensions Questionnaire. Dogs were classified as underweight (scores 1–3), healthy weight (4–5), or overweight/obese (6–9).

Statistical analysis revealed that overweight/obese dogs were disproportionately represented among owners scoring highest in permissive parenting behaviors. Additional logistic regression analysis confirmed several significant risk factors for canine overweight: older age, neutering, low exercise levels, and lower owner education level.

The authors suggest that behavioral interventions targeting dog-owner interactions—particularly reducing permissiveness—may enhance weight management efforts. This behavioral component represents a novel approach to managing pet obesity by considering the psychological and relational dynamics between owners and their pets.

These findings support a broader understanding of canine obesity not just as a nutritional or physiological issue, but as one also influenced by owner behavior and decision-making patterns. Public health initiatives and veterinary advice may benefit from incorporating parenting-style assessments into dog weight management programs.
