Genetic Roots of Freight Dogs Reveal Surprising Ancestry

Research Study Chiang Mai, Thailand, August 10, 2025 – A genetic analysis of freight dog breeds reveals shared Arctic ancestry and key adaptive traits, including unexpected contributions from German Shepherds and Collies.

Freight dogs, prized for their ability to haul loads across frozen terrain, have long served northern communities. A study led by Muhammad Basil Ali and colleagues explored the genetic makeup of two such freight dog populations—the Mackenzie River Husky and the Chinook, a recognized breed by the American Kennel Club. Their findings trace surprising ancestral threads and highlight the adaptive genes that make these dogs uniquely suited for Arctic work.

Using haplotype and admixture analysis, the research team identified shared contributions from traditional Arctic breeds like the Alaskan Malamute and Greenland sled dog. However, their analysis also revealed unexpected genetic input from German Shepherds and Collies, suggesting complex historical breeding paths beyond the Arctic Circle.

Beyond ancestry, the researchers focused on genomic regions nearing fixation—areas in the dog genome where variation is reduced, indicating selection pressure. These regions contained provocative genes tied to the dogs’ specialized roles as freight haulers. Notably, both breeds showed signs of selection in lipid-processing genes, especially at the MLXIPL gene locus, known to influence fat metabolism—an essential trait for dogs working in sub-zero conditions.

This genetic evidence supports the idea that dogs of similar function—like pulling sleds in freezing environments—can converge on similar genetic solutions, even if their ancestry is diverse. These insights offer more than historical curiosity: they inform breeding programs, veterinary care, and conservation strategies for working dogs in extreme environments.
