How Enrichment Affects Dog Behavior: A Pilot Study

Research Study – Chiang Mai, Thailand – July 10, 2025
Does enrichment actually reduce stress in working dogs? A new pilot study by Hunt et al. (2022) evaluates the behavioural effects of seven different enrichment types.

Environmental enrichment (EE) is often hailed as a key factor in improving the welfare of captive animals — including dogs. But not all enrichment is created equal.

A pilot study by Hunt et al. (2022) examined the behavioural impact of seven different EE activities on ten training dogs in an assistance dog charity. These dogs were housed in an office environment and observed both before and after the interventions.

The enrichment types included: Bonding, Bubble Machine, Conspecific Play, Interactive Toy, Playhouse, Stuffed Food Toy, and Tug Play. The findings revealed a significant increase in relaxation behaviours and a reduction in alertness and stress. Notably, Conspecific Play and Playhouse activities triggered the most positive behavioural changes, while food-based EE like interactive toys showed the least effect.

The researchers argue that EE should no longer be seen as a single concept, but rather as a diverse toolkit of sensory, social, cognitive, and physical experiences. For enrichment to be effective, it must be varied, engaging, and tailored to the individual dog’s needs and environment.

This study offers practical insights for trainers, shelters, and pet owners: choose your enrichment wisely — and don’t rely solely on food toys to improve behaviour and wellbeing.
