Energy Needs for Growing Norfolk Terrier Puppies

Study Chiang Mai, Thailand, October 28, 2025 – Research by Bradley et al. (2021) found that Norfolk Terrier puppies require substantially less dietary energy for growth than predicted by NRC (2006) feeding guidelines, underscoring the need for updated nutrition standards for small breeds.

Determining appropriate energy intake during puppy growth is critical to prevent obesity and related health disorders. The National Research Council (NRC, 2006) provides a universal equation to estimate canine energy requirements for growth based on predicted adult body weight. However, this model may overestimate the actual needs of small breeds. In a year-long investigation, Bradley and colleagues (2021) examined the daily energy requirements of 17 Norfolk Terrier puppies to assess how much energy they truly need to grow healthily without excess weight gain.

Puppies were fed individually measured, complete, and balanced diets to maintain an optimal body condition score (BCS). Energy intake was recorded daily, with veterinary health assessments, bloodwork, and bone density scans performed regularly to ensure normal development. Despite maintaining ideal body condition and healthy skeletal growth, the puppies consistently required less energy than the NRC (2006) prediction at every time point—most notably, 285 kJ/kg0.75 per day less at 10 weeks of age.

The findings suggest that applying current NRC equations to small-breed puppies could result in positive energy balance and early-onset obesity. This study provides strong evidence that feeding guidelines should be revised to reflect breed size and developmental stage rather than relying on generalized estimates. Tailoring nutrition to growth patterns could help owners and veterinarians better support lifelong metabolic health in small dogs.

By demonstrating the disparity between theoretical and observed energy requirements, this study reinforces the importance of individualized feeding plans based on body condition rather than fixed calorie formulas. For owners of small breeds, close monitoring of body weight and adjusting portions accordingly remain key strategies for preventing obesity later in life.
