Dogs Show Hidden Anxiety to Household Noises, Study Finds

Research Study Chiang Mai, Thailand, August 7, 2025 – A study by Grigg and colleagues finds that companion dogs may be significantly stressed by routine household noises, while their owners often misread or ignore their distress signals.

While much research on canine noise sensitivity has focused on extreme events like fireworks or thunderstorms, a 2021 study published in Frontiers in Veterinary Science shifts the spotlight to a more subtle yet pervasive source of distress: common household sounds. The research team, led by E. Grigg, combined survey responses from 386 dog owners with behavioral analysis from 62 online videos to assess how dogs react to everyday noises like smoke detectors, vacuum cleaners, and microwaves.

Survey respondents reported a range of stress behaviors in their dogs, including panting, trembling, hiding, and escape attempts. These reactions were most pronounced in response to high-frequency, intermittent noises—sounds often perceived as harmless by humans.

However, a striking finding emerged: many owners appeared to underestimate their dogs’ fear. In the analyzed videos, most humans responded with amusement or indifference, and welfare concerns were rarely raised. This disconnect between canine behavior and human interpretation raises ethical and practical concerns for dog welfare.

The authors call for better educational outreach to help owners identify signs of stress and anxiety in dogs. Proper interpretation of body language and behavioral cues is critical not only for addressing existing anxiety, but also for preventing the development of more serious behavior problems over time.
