Breed Differences Found in Dog Temperament Tests

Study Chiang Mai, Thailand, August 25, 2025 – A temperament study in Egypt found that Griffons had higher passing rates than Cane Corsos and German Shepherds in the American Temperament Test.

Temperament is defined as a dog’s innate tendency to respond to stimuli in consistent ways, shaping behavior across situations. A study published in July 2024 in the Assiut Veterinary Medical Journal assessed temperament differences among breeds using the American Temperament Test (ATT), a standardized measure designed to identify fearfulness, shyness, and behavioral stability in dogs.

The study evaluated 62 dogs, including 16 Cane Corsos from the working group, 14 German Shepherds from the herding group, and 32 Griffons from the toy group. Statistical analyses confirmed reliable results, with Cronbach’s alpha used to assess internal consistency.

Findings revealed that Griffons achieved significantly higher passing rates than Cane Corsos and German Shepherds. Griffons displayed a temperament characterized as intelligent, alert, sensitive, curious, and notably self-important, which contributed to their superior ATT performance. In contrast, Cane Corsos were described as protective, easily trained, docile, and affectionate with family, while German Shepherds demonstrated traits of being fearless, confident, aloof with strangers, and resolute.

The authors concluded that differences in temperament across breed groups significantly influenced test outcomes. The results highlight the value of the ATT in identifying temperament profiles that may be addressed through training, as well as guiding breed-specific management strategies for owners and breeders.
