Canine Olfaction: Physiology and Practical Uses

Research Study Chiang Mai, Thailand, September 28, 2025 – A review by Agata Kokocińska-Kusiak et al. (2021) explores the anatomical, physiological, and behavioral foundations of canine olfaction, emphasizing its remarkable role in medicine, detection, and human–dog cooperation.

Dogs’ sense of smell is not just superior to humans—it is the core of their sensory world. With a detection threshold often lower than that of sophisticated laboratory instruments, dogs can interpret both current and past environmental information, track dynamic odor sources, and detect subtle metabolic changes in humans.

Kokocińska-Kusiak and colleagues (2021) review how specialized anatomical features, such as an expansive olfactory epithelium and highly sensitive receptor neurons, make this possible. Their work highlights how behavioral strategies like sniffing patterns enhance efficiency in locating and identifying odor sources.

Applications of canine olfaction are wide-ranging: from detecting drugs, explosives, and missing persons in security contexts to identifying diseases such as cancer, diabetes, and even COVID-19. Dogs’ sensitivity to chemical and emotional cues suggests that they function as mobile biosensors, capable of outperforming modern technologies in real-world environments.

This review underscores the importance of dogs as both companions and collaborators, revealing their unparalleled olfactory skills as vital tools in advancing medicine, public safety, and human well-being.
