Premack Principle

Premack Principle in Dog Training

Using what dogs want to build what they need.

Premack Principle

The Premack Principle, also called “Grandma’s Rule,” states that a more probable behaviour can be used to reinforce a less probable one. In dog training, this means a dog can earn access to something it strongly desires by first performing a requested behaviour.

For example, a dog who loves running off-leash may first need to sit calmly before being released to play. Sitting is the less probable behaviour, reinforced by the opportunity to run. This principle turns natural desires into powerful rewards.

The Premack Principle transforms life rewards into training tools – patience and obedience unlock freedom and fun.

Core benefits of the Premack Principle include:

  • Harnessing natural motivations like play, sniffing, or social interaction
  • Strengthening impulse control and patience
  • Making training practical in real-world environments
  • Reducing reliance on food rewards over time

Life itself becomes the reward – every privilege earned through cooperation builds stronger behaviour and trust.

Premack Principle – FAQ

A dog sits calmly (less probable behaviour) before being allowed to chase a ball or run off-leash (more probable behaviour).

Because it works like: “You must eat your vegetables before you can have dessert.” A less preferred activity is reinforced by a preferred one.

Not necessarily. Food can still be useful, but life rewards like play, sniffing, or freedom can be equally or more powerful motivators.

When a dog is highly motivated by the activity offered as reinforcement, and when the less probable behaviour is achievable and clear.

Yes. For example, asking a dog to focus calmly before being allowed to look at or move toward another dog can reduce reactive behaviour over time.
