Yorkshire Terrier History

Originating in 19th-century England, the Yorkshire Terrier was developed by Scottish weavers who migrated to Yorkshire. They crossed various terrier breeds—including the now-extinct Clydesdale and Paisley Terriers—to create a small, energetic ratter for textile mills.

Over time, the breed transitioned from working-class exterminator to aristocratic lapdog. Its striking appearance and lively charm helped it gain international popularity, and it remains one of the most beloved toy breeds today.

Yorkshire Terrier Temperament

Yorkies are brave, alert, and often bossy despite their small stature. They bond deeply with their owners and thrive on companionship. Though affectionate and playful, they may act standoffish with strangers or unfamiliar dogs.

They are intelligent but can be stubborn, so consistent, gentle training from an early age is essential. Their terrier roots shine through in their energy, vocal tendencies, and curiosity.

Note: Many Yorkies believe they’re bigger than they are. Socialization is crucial to keep confidence from tipping into reactivity.

Health and wellness

The Yorkie’s long, flowing coat is high-maintenance and requires daily brushing or regular trimming. They are prone to dental issues due to their tiny jaws and require lifelong dental care.

Because of their size, they are sensitive to rough handling and must be protected from falls or trauma.

Significant problems:

Tracheal collapse

Patellar luxation

Dental disease

Hypoglycaemia (in puppies)

Portosystemic shunt (liver disorder)

Life expectancy: 12–15 years
