The West Highland White Terrier—affectionately known as the Westie—is a bold, bright, and irresistibly charming small terrier with a snowy white coat. Compact yet confident, the Westie is a true character full of loyalty and spunk.
West Highland White Terrier History
Originating in Scotland in the 1800s, the Westie was bred to hunt vermin and small game on farms and estates. Its white coat was deliberately selected to distinguish it from prey during hunts, especially in contrast to darker-coloured animals.
It shares ancestry with other Scottish terriers like the Cairn and Scottish Terrier, but its distinct white coat and lively personality helped it gain separate recognition by the early 20th century. The breed became a favourite among British households for its manageability and character.

Westie Temperament
Westies are spirited, curious, and independent—but deeply devoted to their families. They thrive on attention and interaction, often surprising with their intelligence and cleverness.
Though they are bold and sometimes feisty with other animals, they’re generally friendly with people and adaptable to various lifestyles—from city apartments to rural homes.
Note: Like most terriers, they benefit from consistent structure, clear boundaries, and mental stimulation to prevent stubbornness.
Health and wellness
Westies are hardy, active little dogs that need daily walks, playtime, and engagement. Their weather-resistant coat requires regular brushing and occasional trimming, especially around the face and legs.
They are generally healthy but may be prone to some genetic conditions, especially skin-related disorders.
Significant problems:
Atopic dermatitis and skin allergies
Craniomandibular osteopathy (puppy condition)
Patellar luxation
Legg-Calvé-Perthes disease (hip joint degeneration)
Dental issues (common in small breeds)
Life expectancy: 13–15 years
