Treeing Walker Coonhound History
The Treeing Walker Coonhound descends from English Foxhounds brought to America in the 18th century. Named after Thomas Walker, who played a key role in refining the breed, these dogs were developed for their speed, scenting ability, and treeing instincts.
Their speciality? Chasing raccoons and other game up into trees and then “baying” to alert their handler. Recognised as a separate breed in the mid-20th century, they quickly became favourites among American hunters.

Treeing Walker Coonhound Temperament
Friendly, confident, and highly driven, this breed lives to follow its nose. It thrives on having a job—whether it’s hunting, trailing scents, or participating in canine sports. Around family, it’s affectionate and even-tempered, though its energy and vocal nature may not suit every home.
This is a dog that requires space, stimulation, and a firm recall command.
Note: Treeing Walkers are natural escape artists and will follow a scent trail for miles if not contained.
Health and wellness
Generally hardy and athletic, Treeing Walker Coonhounds require ample daily exercise to avoid restlessness. Their short coat is low-maintenance, but their long ears should be cleaned regularly to prevent infections. As a deep-chested breed, bloat is a concern.
Routine vet visits help catch joint or heart issues early.
Significant problems:
Hip dysplasia
Ear infections (due to long, floppy ears)
Bloat (gastric torsion)
Heart murmurs (occasionally observed)
Skin allergies in some lines
Life expectancy: 12–13 years
