Sloughi (Arabian Greyhound)

The Sloughi is a graceful, dignified sight hound from North Africa known for its quiet presence, keen eyesight, and deep loyalty. Bred to hunt game in harsh desert climates, it is elegant, sensitive, and reserved.

Sloughi History

Originating in the Maghreb region of North Africa (including Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia, and Libya), the Sloughi has ancient roots—depicted in artwork dating back thousands of years. It was a prized hunting and guarding dog among Berber tribes, capable of chasing down hares, gazelles, and jackals over vast, arid terrain.

The breed remained relatively unknown outside of North Africa until the 20th century. It was recognised by the FCI and gained AKC recognition in 2016 under the Hound Group.

Sloughi Temperament

Noble, quiet, and deeply loyal, the Sloughi bonds closely with its family but remains reserved with strangers. It is intelligent, emotionally sensitive, and observant, often forming a strong one-on-one bond with its primary person.

Unlike some more playful sighthounds, the Sloughi is serious and prefers calm environments. It is not aggressive, but it will not welcome rough handling or chaotic surroundings.

Note: Early socialization is critical to develop a well-balanced adult. Harsh training can damage its trust.

Health and wellness

Sloughis are athletic but not hyper. They require daily exercise—long walks, sprints in secure areas, or lure coursing are excellent options. Without proper activity, they may become bored and anxious.

Their short, smooth coat requires minimal grooming—occasional brushing and a bath now and then are sufficient. They are sensitive to cold and need protection in cooler climates.

Significant problems:

Progressive retinal atrophy (PRA)

Autoimmune disorders (rare but noted in some lines)

Anesthesia sensitivity (common in sighthounds)

Hip dysplasia (less common)

Bloat (gastric torsion, rare but possible)

Life expectancy: 12–15 years
