Shiba Inu

The Shiba Inu is a compact and spirited Japanese breed known for its fox-like appearance, bold personality, and clean habits. Independent yet affectionate, this ancient hunting dog thrives in environments that respect its autonomy.

Shiba Inu History

The Shiba Inu is one of the oldest and smallest native Japanese dog breeds, originally bred to flush birds and small game in the mountainous regions of Japan. Its history dates back over 2,000 years. The breed almost went extinct during World War II but was revived through breeding programs that preserved its distinct lines.

It was officially recognised by the Japanese Kennel Club in the mid-20th century and by the AKC in 1992. Despite its ancient lineage, the Shiba has gained massive modern popularity, especially due to internet fame (e.g., the “Doge” meme), but it remains a strong-willed and often misunderstood breed.

Shiba Inu Temperament

The Shiba Inu is alert, confident, and often described as cat-like in cleanliness and independence. While loyal to its owner, it does not display the typical eagerness to please seen in many Western breeds. It prefers respect and consistency over affection overload.

Shibas can be aloof with strangers and may show dominance or same-sex aggression toward other dogs. They are fast learners but can be stubborn, so training requires patience and creativity.

Note: Shibas are known escape artists and require secure fencing and leash reliability. They are not typically off-leash dogs unless extremely well-trained.

Health and wellness

Shibas are active and agile, requiring regular walks and play sessions. While they don’t need extreme physical exertion, they do best with daily structure and interactive games.

Their plush double coat sheds seasonally and needs regular brushing. They are naturally clean and often self-groom like cats.

Significant problems:
