The Samoyed is a striking, white-coated working dog known for its “Sammy smile,” gentle nature, and thick, weatherproof coat. Bred to herd reindeer and pull sleds in arctic Siberia, it combines strength, endurance, and friendliness.
Samoyed History
Originating from Siberia, the Samoyed was developed by the indigenous Samoyede people (now known as the Nenets) for herding, pulling sleds, and keeping their families warm. These dogs lived closely with humans and were prized for their versatility, endurance, and friendly temperament.
British explorers introduced the breed to Europe in the late 19th century, where it gained fame during polar expeditions. The AKC officially recognised the Samoyed in 1906.
Samoyed Temperament
Cheerful, gentle, and affectionate, the Samoyed is a devoted family dog with a strong sense of companionship. It is good with children, friendly to strangers, and rarely shows aggression. However, it has a strong working drive and may become bored if under-stimulated.
Sammies are intelligent but can be independent thinkers. They do best with positive, consistent training and love having a job or purpose.
Note: This breed is a vocal communicator—expect barks, howls, and expressive grumbles.
Health and wellness
Samoyeds need daily physical activity and mental engagement. Long walks, hiking, pulling, or structured play are essential for their happiness and health.
Their thick double coat sheds year-round and “blows out” seasonally. Frequent brushing (several times a week) is needed to prevent matting. They are sensitive to heat and must be kept cool in warm climates.
