The Rottweiler is a powerful, confident working dog known for its loyalty, courage, and protective instincts. With a robust build and calm demeanour, it is both a natural guardian and a devoted family member.

Rottweiler History

The Rottweiler descends from ancient Roman drover dogs used to herd cattle and guard outposts during military campaigns. As the Roman Empire expanded into what is now southern Germany, these dogs evolved into working companions in the town of Rottweil—hence the name.

Originally used by butchers to pull carts and guard livestock, Rottweilers nearly went extinct with the advent of rail transport. The breed was revitalised in the early 20th century and gained AKC recognition in 1931. Today, they are popular in protection work, police service, and as loyal companions.

Rottweiler Temperament

Calm, confident, and fearless, the Rottweiler is a highly intelligent and trainable breed. It bonds deeply with its family and is known for being affectionate, especially toward children in its home.

However, it is also naturally protective and can be wary of strangers. This makes socialisation from an early age essential. When well-trained, the Rottweiler is reliable, obedient, and responsive—a true working partner.

Note: This breed requires firm but fair leadership. Inconsistent training or lack of boundaries can lead to behavioural problems, especially in strong-willed individuals.

Health and wellness

Rottweilers benefit from daily structured exercise such as long walks, obedience drills, or working activities. They are muscular and need strength conditioning but should avoid overexertion while growing.

Their short coat is easy to maintain with weekly brushing. They thrive in homes with physical space and clear routines.

Significant problems:

Hip and elbow dysplasia

Osteosarcoma (bone cancer)

Aortic stenosis (heart condition)

Progressive retinal atrophy (PRA)

Life expectancy: 9–11 years
