Puli History

Originating in Hungary over 1,000 years ago, the Puli was developed by the Magyars to herd and guard livestock across the country’s expansive plains. Its unique, waterproof corded coat protected it from harsh weather and allowed it to navigate rough terrain while working closely with shepherds.

The breed nearly vanished after World War II but was revived by devoted fanciers. Today, the Puli remains a symbol of Hungarian pastoral heritage and is celebrated for its working instinct and distinct appearance.

Puli Temperament

Lively, determined, and quick-thinking, the Puli thrives in environments where mental stimulation and physical activity are part of daily life. It bonds closely with its family and often takes on a supervisory role, especially around children or other pets.

Though naturally wary of strangers, it is rarely aggressive—preferring alert barking and watchful positioning over confrontation.

Note: The Puli’s herding instincts can extend to people and vehicles, making early training and structured leadership essential.

Health and wellness

The Puli is a generally healthy breed with good longevity. However, the dense, corded coat requires knowledgeable care to prevent matting and skin issues. Regular grooming is essential, and some owners choose to trim or manage the cords differently.

Joint health and eye conditions should be monitored as the breed ages.

Significant problems:

Hip dysplasia

Progressive retinal atrophy (PRA)

Cataracts

Deafness (rare)

Skin infections if cords are not properly dried after bathing

Life expectancy: 12–16 years
