Pug History
The Pug’s lineage traces back over 2,000 years to ancient China, where they were bred as companions for emperors. These little dogs were so prized they lived in luxury and were protected by palace guards.
Later introduced to Europe through Dutch traders, Pugs became the darling of aristocrats and royalty—famously adored by Queen Victoria and featured in European paintings of the 17th and 18th centuries.
Their charm, size, and charisma made them enduring favourites as companion dogs around the world.

Pug Temperament
Pugs are affectionate, loyal, and surprisingly sturdy for their size. They love human company and are rarely far from their people. Despite their small stature, they’re fearless, often trying to keep up with much larger dogs.
They’re emotionally intuitive and often act like comedians—seeking reactions and attention. While generally sociable with people and dogs, they can be stubborn during training and easily distracted.
Note: They thrive on routine and gentle correction, not harshness.
Health and wellness
Due to their brachycephalic (short-nosed) skull structure, Pugs are prone to breathing difficulties and overheating. They should never be overexerted in heat or high humidity.
Regular exercise and diet control are essential to prevent obesity, which exacerbates joint and breathing issues. Their facial folds need regular cleaning to avoid infection, and their protruding eyes are prone to injury and dryness.
Significant problems:
Brachycephalic airway syndrome
Obesity-related issues
Corneal ulcers and eye injuries
Skin fold dermatitis
Hip dysplasia and luxating patella
Life expectancy: 12–15 years
