Poodle (Standard, Miniature, Toy)

The Poodle is one of the world’s most intelligent and elegant breeds—highly trainable, hypoallergenic, and brimming with personality. Whether Standard, Miniature, or Toy, this versatile dog excels in companionship, sports, and style.

Poodle History

The Poodle’s origins trace back to Germany, where it was first bred as a water retriever (Pudel means “splash” in German). It was later refined in France, gaining popularity among nobles for its intelligence, trainability, and flamboyant grooming styles.

The Standard Poodle was the original size. Over time, smaller varieties were bred for companionship: the Miniature Poodle (ideal for truffle hunting and city life), and the Toy Poodle, designed to sit in royal laps.

Despite the showy image, all sizes are working dogs at heart—clever, eager, and energetic.

Poodle Temperament

Poodles are known for their sharp intelligence, loyalty, and adaptability. They thrive on human interaction and mental stimulation. Boredom or lack of purpose can lead to mischief or anxiety.

They’re affectionate with their family, usually friendly with strangers, and highly trainable. Their emotional sensitivity makes them excellent therapy dogs—but also means they need stable, positive environments.

Note: Poodles excel at learning tricks, agility, and advanced obedience—but need routine and boundaries like any intelligent breed.

Health and wellness

Poodles require daily mental and physical exercise—long walks, training sessions, puzzles, or playtime. The Standard is more athletic; Miniature and Toy Poodles are more adaptable to apartment life but still need stimulation.

Their curly, low-shedding coat is hypoallergenic for many allergy sufferers—but needs regular brushing and professional grooming.

Significant problems:

Hip dysplasia

Patellar luxation (Miniature & Toy)

Addison’s disease

Progressive retinal atrophy (PRA)

Epilepsy

Life expectancy: 12–17 years
