Norwegian Buhund History
Originating in Norway, the Buhund (meaning “farm dog”) dates back to the time of the Vikings. Archaeological finds from ancient Viking sites show that these dogs traveled and worked alongside Norse settlers as all-purpose herders, guardians, and companions.
Historically used to herd livestock and protect farms, the Buhund is still a beloved breed in Scandinavia. Known for its versatility, it has been adapted to modern life as a companion, agility dog, and even a service animal.

Norwegian Buhund Temperament
The Buhund is known for its friendly, outgoing nature. They are intelligent, eager to please, and thrive on having a job to do. With family, they are affectionate and playful, making them excellent companions for active households.
They can be vocal and alert, naturally taking on watchdog duties. Early socialization helps channel their energy and ensure they remain confident but well-mannered.
Note: The Buhund thrives on positive reinforcement and can become bored without enough mental and physical stimulation. They do best in environments where they can be part of the action and engage in daily activities.
Health and wellness
The Norwegian Buhund is generally a healthy and robust breed, but like all breeds, they have certain health considerations. Regular exercise is key to keeping them physically and mentally fit. Their double coat requires regular brushing, especially during shedding seasons.
Significant problems:
Hip dysplasia
Cataracts
Epilepsy
Skin allergies
Patellar luxation
Life expectancy: 12–15 years
