Manchester Terrier History

Originating in 19th-century England, the Manchester Terrier was bred by crossing Whippets and Black-and-Tan Terriers to create a dog with speed, keen eyesight, and unrelenting prey drive. Their mission: control vermin in the booming industrial city of Manchester.

Known as the “Gentleman’s Terrier,” the breed combined refined appearance with working grit. There are two varieties—Standard and Toy—both recognized by major kennel clubs, and both embodying the same sleek silhouette and bold heart.

Manchester Terrier Temperament

Quick-witted and observant, Manchester Terriers are intensely loyal and thrive on interaction with their people. They form strong bonds and dislike being left out—expect them to be part of the action, wherever you are.

They’re sensitive, yet confident, and require gentle consistency rather than harshness. Their alertness makes them excellent watchdogs, though they’re not prone to excessive barking. Highly trainable and fast on the uptake, they excel in agility, obedience, and structured play.
