Graceful, glamorous, and ancient—the Maltese is a lapdog with a legacy. Beneath the flowing white coat lies a bright, alert, and affectionate companion with a heart much bigger than its size.
Maltese History
The Maltese is one of the oldest toy breeds, tracing its lineage back more than 2,000 years. Believed to have originated on the island of Malta, this dog was a favourite among Roman nobility, Egyptian elites, and Renaissance aristocrats alike.
Revered as a symbol of refinement and devotion, the Maltese was often featured in paintings and literature as the quintessential lap companion—elegant, loyal, and full of personality.

Maltese Temperament
Maltese dogs are cheerful, lively, and extremely people-focused. They crave attention and thrive in close contact with their human family, often shadowing their favourite person from room to room.
Despite their delicate appearance, they are bold, curious, and surprisingly resilient. They’re quick to learn and eager to please—though early socialisation is key to prevent overprotective or barky behaviour.
Note: Their sensitivity means they do best in calm, structured environments with gentle handling.
Health and wellness
Maltese dogs are generally long-lived but require specific attention to dental health, grooming, and nutrition. Their coat needs daily care to prevent tangles, and tear staining is common if not managed through diet and hygiene.
They need high-quality, easily digestible food, moderate exercise, and preventive vet care to stay at their best.
Significant problems:
Dental disease
Patellar luxation
Collapsed trachea
White shaker syndrome
Hypoglycemia (especially in puppies)
Life expectancy: 12–15 years
