Lhasa Apso History
Originating in the mountains of Tibet, the Lhasa Apso was a sacred sentinel in Buddhist monasteries, tasked with alerting monks to intruders. Their thick coat protected them from harsh climates, while their keen awareness made them trusted guardians.
Named after the sacred city of Lhasa, they were once considered so spiritually important that they were only gifted, not sold. The breed arrived in the West in the early 20th century and was quickly admired for its unique combination of form and function.

Lhasa Apso Temperament
Lhasas are independent, discerning, and quietly affectionate. They are not overtly clingy, but they form deep bonds and are exceptionally loyal to their families.
Naturally suspicious of strangers, they make excellent watchdogs. While not aggressive by nature, they won’t hesitate to vocalize discomfort or intrusion.
Note: Their confident demeanour can sometimes be misinterpreted as stubbornness, but with respectful guidance, they thrive.
Health and wellness
Lhasa Apsos are hardy dogs with impressive longevity but do require proactive health monitoring. Their long, dense coat demands consistent grooming to prevent mats and skin infections.
They thrive on structured routines and a balanced, protein-rich diet to maintain their signature coat and overall vitality.
Significant problems:
Progressive retinal atrophy (PRA)
Patellar luxation
Dry eye and other ocular issues
Kidney problems (in older dogs)
Allergies and sensitivities to poor-quality food
Life expectancy: 12–16 years
