Leonberger

The Leonberger is a majestic, giant working dog that blends strength with gentleness. Known for its lion-like mane, deep loyalty, and calm nature, it excels as a family companion, therapy dog, and versatile worker.

Leonberger History

The Leonberger was developed in the mid-19th century in Leonberg, Germany, by crossing Saint Bernards, Newfoundlands, and Great Pyrenees to create a noble-looking dog that symbolised the lion on the town’s crest.

Originally bred to be a companion to European royalty, the Leonberger also proved itself in farm work, rescue operations, and cart-pulling. Though nearly extinct after World War I and II, the breed was revived and is now internationally appreciated. The AKC recognised it in 2010.

Leonberger Temperament

Gentle, affectionate, and majestic, the Leonberger is known for being excellent with children and protective without being aggressive. It forms strong bonds with its people and tends to be calm and confident.

Despite its size, it is sensitive and thrives in homes with consistent routines, soft leadership, and social contact. Leonbergers do not tolerate harsh handling and prefer clear, kind communication.

Note: Their sheer size and coat require commitment. Early training and socialisation are essential for safe, confident adulthood.

Health and wellness

Leonbergers need daily moderate-to-high exercise—structured walks, swimming, hiking, and mental stimulation help balance their energy. They’re happiest when they have a purpose or are included in family activities.

Their dense, water-resistant double coat needs regular brushing (at least twice weekly), especially during seasonal shedding. Drooling is moderate, depending on the individual.

Significant problems:

Hip and elbow dysplasia

Polyneuropathy (neurological disorder)

Osteosarcoma (bone cancer)

Gastric torsion (bloat)

Progressive retinal atrophy (PRA)

Life expectancy: 8–9 years
