Kooikerhondje

The Kooikerhondje is a charming Dutch spaniel-type breed known for its orange-red coat, feathered tail, and joyful expression. Once used to lure ducks into traps, it’s now a cheerful, sensitive companion and versatile sporting dog.

Kooikerhondje History

Originating in the Netherlands during the 16th century, the Kooikerhondje was used in “Eendenkooi” (duck decoys)—a traditional method of duck hunting where dogs lured waterfowl into traps using their white-tipped tails and quiet movements.

The breed nearly vanished after World War II but was revived through dedicated breeding programs. It was recognised by the FCI in 1971 and the AKC in 2018 under the Sporting Group.

Kooikerhondje Temperament

Friendly, gentle, and highly trainable, the Kooikerhondje is a people-focused dog that forms strong bonds with its family. It is generally polite with strangers, affectionate with children, and sociable with other animals when properly socialized.

Though not overly energetic, it is agile and enjoys structured activity—especially scent games, obedience, and light agility. It’s happiest when included in daily life and given consistent, fair guidance.

Note: This breed can be sensitive to harsh correction and requires a calm, positive training approach.

Health and wellness

The Kooikerhondje thrives on daily walks, playtime, and engaging tasks. It is well-suited to active homes but does not need extreme exercise. Mental stimulation (e.g. scent work, tricks) helps prevent boredom.

Its medium-length, water-repellent coat is easy to maintain—brushing 1–2 times a week is typically sufficient. They are generally clean dogs but prone to ear issues if not monitored.

Significant problems:

Patellar luxation

Epilepsy (hereditary risk in some lines)

Von Willebrand’s disease (rare)

Ear infections (especially with high humidity)

Sensitivity to anesthesia (known in some lines)

Life expectancy: 12–15 years
