Italian Greyhound History

The Italian Greyhound has existed for over 2,000 years, with origins in the Mediterranean region. Favoured by Roman nobility and Renaissance aristocrats, it became a popular lapdog and status symbol in Italian courts—hence the name.

While bred for companionship, it retains strong sighthound instincts. The breed was brought to England and later America, gaining AKC recognition in 1886. Today, it combines elegance and affection in a compact package.

Italian Greyhound Temperament

Sweet, sensitive, and deeply affectionate, the Italian Greyhound bonds tightly with its people. It loves warmth, cuddles, and following its favourite human from room to room. Though slightly reserved with strangers, it rarely shows aggression.

Playful and mischievous, it retains puppy-like energy into adulthood. While eager to please, it can be easily startled and needs gentle, positive reinforcement during training.

Note: Italian Greyhounds are emotionally delicate and physically fragile—best suited to calm households with considerate handling.

Health and wellness

This breed needs daily gentle exercise—walks, short sprints, and indoor play help release energy. Though active, it’s also an expert lounger.

The short, fine coat is nearly maintenance-free but offers little insulation; Italian Greyhounds need sweaters or jackets in cool climates. Their thin skin is prone to cuts and scrapes, and care must be taken to avoid injury.

Significant problems:

Leg fractures (especially in young dogs)

Dental disease

Epilepsy

Progressive retinal atrophy (PRA)

Autoimmune skin disorders

Life expectancy: 13–15 years
