Glen of Imaal Terrier History

Originating in the remote Glen of Imaal in County Wicklow, Ireland, this rare terrier was bred by 16th-century settlers to work silently and alone. Unlike other terriers that bark and bolt, the Glen’s job was stealthy: go into dens, dispatch vermin, and come back quietly.

They also earned their keep by turning meat on a spit in kitchens—a unique job that required stamina and patience. Official recognition came much later, with the breed still considered a hidden gem even among terrier enthusiasts.

Glen of Imaal Terrier Temperament

Low to the ground but big in personality, the Glen is a calm and self-contained dog compared to other terriers. They’re affectionate with their family, tolerant with children, and not prone to constant barking.

These terriers are clever but not show-offs. They work when needed and relax when not—making them more adaptable to modern life than many high-strung breeds. Early training, structure, and consistent rules help bring out their stable nature.

Note: Without purposeful activity or emotional connection, the Glen can become stubborn or withdrawn. They need direction, not dominance—structure, not stress.
