French Bulldog

The French Bulldog is a compact, muscular companion dog with bat-like ears, a short nose, and a playful, affectionate personality. Small in size but big in charm, it thrives on close human companionship.

French Bulldog History

The French Bulldog descends from small bulldog-type dogs bred in England and brought to France by lace workers during the Industrial Revolution. In France, they were further refined into the modern “Frenchie,” prized for their expressive ears and companionable nature.

The breed rose to popularity in Paris cafés and among artists, eventually becoming a symbol of fashionable city living. Recognised by the AKC in 1898, French Bulldogs are now one of the most popular small breeds globally, particularly among urban dwellers.

French Bulldog Temperament

Charming, affectionate, and comical, the Frenchie is a true companion dog. It bonds deeply with its humans and thrives on being part of the household routine. While not yappy, it is alert and can make a decent watchdog.

French Bulldogs are easygoing but can have a stubborn streak. They respond best to positive reinforcement and patient training. They enjoy play but tire quickly and are generally content with moderate activity.

Note: Frenchies do not do well alone for long hours and are prone to separation anxiety. Their snub-nosed anatomy also makes them sensitive to heat and overexertion.

Health and wellness

French Bulldogs require short daily walks and gentle play to stay healthy. They are not suited for intense physical activity and should be protected from heat and humidity.

Their short coat is easy to care for, but facial wrinkles need regular cleaning. Watch their weight closely to reduce stress on joints and breathing.

Significant problems:

Brachycephalic obstructive airway syndrome (BOAS)

Intervertebral disc disease (IVDD)

Allergies and ear infections

Patellar luxation

Life expectancy: 10–12 years
