The Coton de Tulear is a small, cheerful companion dog known for its cotton-like coat, playful demeanour, and affectionate nature. Native to Madagascar, it’s a social, people-loving breed with an endearing personality.
Coton de Tulear History
Originating in Madagascar, the Coton de Tulear is named after the port city of Tulear and its unique, soft coat that resembles cotton. It descended from small companion dogs brought by sailors and nobles in the 16th or 17th century, eventually becoming the cherished “Royal Dog of Madagascar.”
It remained relatively unknown outside of Madagascar until the late 20th century. The breed was recognised by the AKC in 2014 and has since gained popularity as a hypoallergenic, affectionate lapdog.

Coton de Tulear Temperament
Sweet, lively, and sociable, the Coton is a natural entertainer and a devoted companion. It thrives on human interaction, often forming deep bonds with its people and displaying clownish, playful behaviours to get attention.
The breed is intelligent and learns quickly, especially when rewarded with praise and play. Cotons are typically friendly with children, other dogs, and even strangers—though they may bark briefly at new arrivals.
Note: Cotons don’t tolerate being left alone for long periods and may develop separation anxiety if neglected.
Health and wellness
Cotons need daily walks and indoor play but are generally moderate in energy. They enjoy mental games, training sessions, and being involved in household activities.
Their soft, long coat requires regular brushing (at least 3–4 times per week) to prevent mats. Professional grooming is recommended. Despite their delicate appearance, they are sturdy and relatively healthy.
Significant problems:
Patellar luxation
Hip dysplasia (less common)
Progressive retinal atrophy (PRA)
Allergies and skin sensitivities
Dental issues (common in toy breeds)
Life expectancy: 14–16 years
