The Rough Collie is a graceful, intelligent herding dog best known for its luxurious coat, gentle expression, and deep loyalty. Immortalised by “Lassie,” this breed blends beauty with devotion and a calm, trainable nature.
Collie History
The Rough Collie originated in Scotland and northern England, where it was used for herding sheep in rugged terrain. Queen Victoria’s fondness for the breed in the 19th century helped elevate its popularity across Europe and later in the U.S.
The breed was refined for elegance and gentleness, especially as it transitioned from working dog to companion. Recognised by the AKC in 1885, the Collie remains a cherished family dog and symbol of devotion.
Collie Temperament
Collies are intelligent, sensitive, and eager to please. They are highly trainable and respond well to kind, consistent guidance. The breed is known for its affection toward children and harmonious coexistence with other pets.
They are alert without being aggressive, making them excellent watchdogs. Collies can be reserved with strangers but rarely shy or timid when socialised early.
Note: Collies are emotionally attuned and may withdraw if treated harshly—positive training methods are essential.
Health and wellness
Collies need daily moderate exercise—walks, fetch, and obedience training are ideal. They enjoy structured play and do well in agility or herding trials.
Their long double coat requires regular brushing (2–3 times per week) to prevent mats and manage seasonal shedding. Eye and ear care should also be part of routine grooming.
