Chow Chow

The Chow Chow is a distinctive and dignified dog with a lion-like mane, deep-set eyes, and a famously aloof temperament. Independent yet loyal, it’s a breed full of ancient mystery and quiet strength.

Chow Chow History

One of the oldest dog breeds, the Chow Chow originated in northern China over 2,000 years ago. It served as a multipurpose working dog—used for guarding, pulling carts, and even hunting. The breed’s name is thought to derive from the pidgin-English term “chow-chow” meaning miscellaneous goods.

Highly prized by Chinese emperors and monks, it eventually made its way to the West in the late 18th century and was recognised by the AKC in 1903. Its unique blue-black tongue and proud demeanour make it instantly recognisable.

Chow Chow Temperament

Chows are calm, proud, and reserved—sometimes likened more to cats than dogs. They tend to bond closely with one or two people and are often aloof with strangers. Unlike many breeds, they do not crave affection from everyone but are deeply loyal to those they trust.

Training a Chow requires patience, respect, and consistency. They are intelligent but strong-willed, and do not tolerate rough handling or chaotic environments well.

Note: Early socialisation is critical. Without it, Chows can become overly suspicious or defensive.

Health and wellness

Chow Chows need moderate daily exercise—walks, gentle play, and mental enrichment help prevent boredom. They dislike heat and should be exercised in cooler parts of the day.

Their dense double coat requires regular brushing (several times per week) and sheds seasonally. Extra attention should be given to skin folds and ears to prevent infections.

Significant problems:

Hip and elbow dysplasia

Entropion (inward rolling eyelids)

Thyroid issues (hypothyroidism)

Patellar luxation

Hot spots and skin allergies

Life expectancy: 10–12 years
