Cairn Terrier History
Originating from the Isle of Skye and the Scottish Highlands, the Cairn Terrier was bred to hunt vermin in rocky terrain—“cairns” being the stone piles where prey would hide. As one of the oldest terrier breeds, its lineage goes back to the foundation of several modern terriers.
Their rugged build and weather-resistant coat made them invaluable to farmers and gamekeepers, and they became popular for their fearless yet charming nature.

Cairn Terrier Temperament
Lively, intelligent, and often cheeky, the Cairn Terrier thrives on interaction and activity. While not aggressive, it’s fearless and full of personality—often chasing anything that moves and always investigating its surroundings.
It is highly trainable but independent. Consistent boundaries and positive training are key to channelling its energy.
Note: The Cairn Terrier has a strong prey drive and will dig, chase, or bark if under-stimulated—early mental engagement prevents unwanted behaviour.
Health and wellness
Generally a robust and healthy breed, the Cairn Terrier has a longer lifespan than many small breeds and is not known for major health issues. However, some genetic concerns do exist and should be monitored with regular veterinary care.
Its wiry double coat needs routine grooming to prevent matting and maintain its weather resistance.
Significant problems:
Craniomandibular osteopathy (puppy growth disorder)
Hypothyroidism
Luxating patella
Ocular melanosis
Portosystemic shunt (PSS)
Life expectancy: 13–15 years
