Briard History
The Briard has been a fixture of French pastoral life since at least the 8th century. Originally bred to guard and herd sheep, the breed was valued for its keen senses, powerful build, and ability to make independent decisions in the field.
Used as a messenger and search dog during both World Wars, the Briard proved its bravery and trainability. Its long history has cemented its place as both a working dog and a loyal family protector across France and beyond.

Briard Temperament
Faithful, alert, and emotionally attuned to its people, the Briard forms intense bonds and thrives on companionship. While it’s gentle with its inner circle, it can be aloof or suspicious toward strangers—true to its herding roots.
This breed needs clear leadership, early socialisation, and mentally engaging work to stay balanced. It is not suited for hands-off owners or low-activity homes.
Note: The Briard has an almost photographic memory, especially of negative experiences—making fair and positive training essential.
Health and wellness
The Briard’s lush double coat requires regular grooming to prevent matting and skin issues. Though generally robust, it is susceptible to several inherited conditions, especially those affecting eyes and joints.
Responsible breeders screen for genetic issues, particularly those that can affect vision or mobility later in life.
Significant problems:
Hip dysplasia
Gastric torsion (bloat)
Progressive retinal atrophy (PRA)
Hypothyroidism
Congenital Stationary Night Blindness (CSNB)
Life expectancy: 10–12 years
