The Boykin Spaniel is a cheerful, compact retriever developed for the swamps and lakes of South Carolina. With its lush chocolate coat and tireless enthusiasm, this breed excels as a hunting partner and affectionate family companion.
Boykin Spaniel History
The Boykin Spaniel traces its roots to early 20th-century South Carolina, where hunters needed a smaller retriever that could fit in boats yet handle heat, water, and dense brush. A stray dog adopted by Lemuel Boykin became the foundation of the breed, which was later refined through crosses with American Water Spaniels, Cocker Spaniels, and Springer Spaniels.
It was officially recognised as the state dog of South Carolina in 1985 and remains beloved for its work ethic and warm temperament.

Boykin Spaniel Temperament
Friendly, outgoing, and energetic, the Boykin Spaniel is eager to please and bonds closely with its family. It handles social situations with ease and is rarely aloof, though it thrives best when given a job to do—especially in outdoor environments.
Smart and food-motivated, it responds well to positive reinforcement and early socialisation.
Note: Without proper physical and mental stimulation, the Boykin can develop restlessness and undesirable behaviours like barking or digging.
Health and wellness
Though generally healthy, the Boykin Spaniel is prone to certain genetic issues that responsible breeders actively screen for. Due to its active nature, joint and eye care are essential for long-term health.
Its wavy coat requires regular brushing to avoid tangles and maintain skin health.
Significant problems:
Exercise-induced collapse (EIC)
Hip dysplasia
Collie eye anomaly (CEA)
Patellar luxation
Ear infections (common in water dogs)
Life expectancy: 12–15 years
