Bouvier des Flandres History
Originating in the Flanders region of Belgium and France, the Bouvier was developed as an all-purpose farm dog—used to drive cattle, pull carts, and guard property. The breed’s name translates to “Cowherd of Flanders.”
World Wars I and II nearly drove the breed to extinction, but surviving lines were rebuilt by dedicated breeders. Today, the Bouvier is respected for its work ethic and resilience, often serving in police, military, and search-and-rescue roles.

Bouvier des Flandres Temperament
Bouviers are calm, confident, and protective. Though they may appear aloof with strangers, they are deeply bonded with their families and exceptionally loyal. They’re intelligent and deliberate, often assessing a situation before reacting.
This breed needs firm but fair guidance and is best suited for experienced owners who understand working dog mentality. Despite their size, they can be sensitive and dislike harsh treatment.
Note: Bouviers thrive when given clear tasks and responsibilities. Without structure and leadership, they may become willful or overly protective.
Health and wellness
The Bouvier’s thick, tousled double coat requires regular grooming and trimming to avoid matting and skin irritation. Due to their size, joint health and controlled exercise are important, especially during development.
They are generally hardy but can inherit several large-breed vulnerabilities.
Significant problems:
Hip and elbow dysplasia
Bloat (gastric torsion)
Glaucoma and cataracts
Hypothyroidism
Subaortic stenosis (heart issue)
Life expectancy: 10–12 years
