Basset Hound

The Basset Hound is a short-legged scent hound with long ears, droopy eyes, and an iconic nose for tracking. Behind the sad expression lies a comical, affectionate, and stubborn companion that thrives on routine and companionship.

Basset Hound History

The Basset Hound originated in France, bred by monks to track rabbits and other small game on foot. The term “Basset” comes from the French word bas, meaning “low”, reflecting the breed’s short stature and ground-level tracking prowess.

Refined in England and later in the United States, the Basset became popular for its slow, steady tracking ability and lovable personality. Today, it’s recognised as both a hunting companion and a unique family pet.

Basset Hound Temperament

Bassets are known for being laid-back, loving, and sociable. They bond closely with their families and generally get along well with other dogs and children. While they enjoy attention, they are not overly demanding—just quietly persistent.

Despite their sleepy appearance, Bassets are incredibly driven when following a scent. They have a stubborn streak and require patient, positive training techniques.

Note: They are vocal hounds and may howl when left alone or excited.
