The Australian Shepherd is an energetic and intelligent herding breed known for its striking eyes, boundless stamina, and sharp instincts. Often called a “working genius,” it thrives on mental challenges and meaningful tasks.
Australian Shepherd History
Despite its name, the Australian Shepherd was actually developed in the United States in the 19th century. It descended from European herding dogs brought to America via Australia by Basque shepherds, which led to its misleading name.
Bred for ranch work, the Aussie became indispensable on farms for its agility, trainability, and tireless energy. The AKC officially recognised the breed in 1991. Today, it’s a standout in agility, obedience, and dog sports—and a favourite of active families and professional handlers alike.

Australian Shepherd Temperament
Loyal, brilliant, and energetic, the Aussie is deeply bonded to its people and thrives on involvement. It’s known for being a velcro dog—wanting to be near its owner at all times. While affectionate with family, it can be reserved with strangers.
Aussies are incredibly trainable but need clear boundaries and tasks to prevent overexcitement or destructive behaviours. Herding instincts may show in chasing or nipping at fast-moving objects or children.
Note: This is not a low-maintenance pet—it requires physical and mental engagement daily.
Health and wellness
Australian Shepherds need high levels of daily activity—running, advanced obedience, trick training, and dog sports are all ideal. Boredom can lead to barking, herding behaviours, or anxiety.
Their medium-length double coat sheds year-round and needs regular brushing. Ear checks are essential, especially for floppy-eared individuals.
Significant problems:
Hip dysplasia
Epilepsy
Progressive retinal atrophy (PRA)
Collie eye anomaly (CEA)
Multidrug sensitivity (MDR1 gene mutation)
Life expectancy: 12–15 years
